• Be SOCIAL!

Using Social Media for your Business

Now that you’re ready to dive in, you may find yourself needing to set-up new pages or profiles. Here is a list of dos and don’ts to help you get started:

1. Be consistent

Your different accounts do not need to be carbon copies of one another, but there should be continuity. Use the same color palette, fonts, theme and voice for all of your graphics, photos, and text. Think about all of the different social media platforms as a single unit that supports your overall brand.

Avoid trying to maintain too many different brands and accounts. Keep it simple and know your limitations.

2. Use a headshot or logo

Your profile picture is super important for setting the stage on how people view you. Make a good first impression! Use a headshot or logo across all of your platforms. You want to be recognizable and memorable.

Avoid using images that are hard to read on a small scale, do not support your brand, or do not represent you in professional capacity.

3. Keep personal and business separate... mostly

“What if I already have a _______ account, do I need a new one?” Well, that largely depends on your existing content. If your existing account is all about you/pets/kids, it would be a good idea to start fresh. Studies have shown that viewers like to see a more personal side of the people they are doing business and, depending on your target audience, certain aspects of your personal life can help support and grow your business. For example, if you do family portraits, posting images of your own family fun can make you relatable. Avoid posting overly personal information (TMI!), complaints about people or other businesses, and negative comments.

4. Cross-promote!

Make sure you list all of your online accounts on any new profile. Also, use the built-in feature (if available) to post on multiple sites at once or simply copy/paste from one to the other. Remind your audience where they can follow you. Post links and invite people to connect.

Avoid being too repetitious. Create a content calendar (future blog post alert!) to plan out your different accounts.
